AMMAN, Jordan, July 3 (UPI) — The family of a Jordanian soldier mistakenly killed by the U.S. forces in Iraq is seeking compensation from the Pentagon.

Attorney Saeed al-Kiswani told United Press International the Pentagon was studying compensating the family of Jordanian soldier Omar Asfour, who was killed two years ago by accident in Fallujah.

The lawyer said he recently received a letter from the Defense Department asking for more information about the soldier, the circumstances surrounding his death and the amount being sought by his family for compensation.

Al-Kiswani claimed the soldier was killed when the U.S. forces bombed by mistake the Jordanian military field hospital in Fallujah two years ago. The U.S. government apologized for the bombing at the time.

Al-Kiswani said the Pentagon’s response to the demands for compensation showed it wanted to settle the case out of court.

The lawyer said Asfour’s family has still not yet set an amount, but expected it to “provide a dignified life for the soldier’s widow and three daughters.”
